Site app, accounting tool, or all-in-one? Choosing construction software in India
Most Indian builders end up running a site app AND Tally AND Excel AND WhatsApp — because each tool only does one part. Here is how the three types of construction software differ, and how to tell which one your firm actually needs.

There is no single "construction software" category — there are three, and they solve different halves of the problem. Pick the wrong type and you end up stitching two or three together and re-keying between them. This guide lays out what each type does well, where it stops, and the questions to ask before you buy.
What you actually get
Type 1 — Site-management apps (great on the field)
Mobile-first apps for daily progress, site photos, tasks, attendance and basic procurement. They shine on the phone at the site. Where they stop: real accounting. GST e-Invoice, e-Way Bill, TDS and statutory payroll are usually synced out to Tally or Zoho — so you still run a second system for the books.
Type 2 — Accounting / GST tools (strong books, no site)
Tools like Tally, Zoho Books or Vyapar handle the ledger, GST returns and TDS well. Where they stop: construction operations. No BOQ, no running-account / milestone billing, no site daily logs, RFIs or NCRs, no PO → GRN → bill 3-way match, no client portal. The project lives in Excel alongside.
Type 3 — Global all-in-one platforms (built for the wrong tax system)
US / global platforms cover site + finance in one product — but around QuickBooks / Xero and US tax. They do not natively do Indian GST e-Invoice (IRN), e-Way Bill, TDS by section, or EPF / ESI / PT payroll, and they are usually priced per user in dollars.
The India-native all-in-one (the missing middle)
One system that runs the site (BOQ, daily logs, procurement, indents, inventory, client portal, schedule) AND the Indian back-office (GST e-Invoice, e-Way Bill, TDS, EPF / ESI / PT payroll) — so there is no second tool to reconcile. This is where Rebaar sits, at SMB per-workspace pricing.
Per-user vs per-workspace pricing
Site apps and global tools usually charge per user, so the bill grows every time you add a site engineer. Per-workspace pricing charges for the firm, not the headcount — often a bigger long-run cost difference than the sticker price.
The honest test: how many tools will you still run?
The real question isn't "which app has the most features" — it's "after I buy this, how many systems am I still juggling?" If the answer is more than one, you've bought half the solution.
Frequently asked questions
What types of construction software are there?
Broadly three: (1) site-management apps (field operations — daily logs, photos, tasks, attendance); (2) accounting / GST tools (ledger, GST returns, TDS — e.g. Tally, Zoho Books); and (3) all-in-one platforms that combine both. Among all-in-ones, most are built for US tax; India-native all-in-ones (like Rebaar) do Indian GST, e-Way Bill, TDS and statutory payroll in the same system.
Do site-management apps handle GST and payroll?
Usually not natively. Most produce GST-formatted invoices but sync the actual accounting to Tally or Zoho for filing, and their "payroll" is attendance-to-wages rather than statutory EPF / ESI / PT / TDS. You typically end up running a separate accounting tool alongside.
Why not just use Tally plus a site app?
You can — many firms do. The cost is double entry and drift: every RA bill created for the client gets re-entered in Tally; every vendor bill approved on WhatsApp gets re-booked. Two systems, one truth — except they slowly disagree. An all-in-one removes the re-keying.
Are the global platforms usable in India?
They work operationally, but their finance is built around QuickBooks / Xero and US tax. Indian GST e-Invoice (IRN), e-Way Bill, TDS and EPF / ESI / PT payroll aren't native, so you bolt on a separate Indian accounting stack — which defeats the "all-in-one" point and adds cost.
What should an Indian SMB builder look for?
One system that covers site operations AND Indian statutory accounting (GST e-Invoice, e-Way Bill, TDS, EPF / ESI / PT payroll), per-workspace pricing so cost doesn't scale with headcount, a self-serve trial so you can test before buying, and export to Tally so your CA isn't disrupted.
Where does Rebaar fit?
Rebaar is the India-native all-in-one: site operations plus Indian statutory accounting and payroll in one workspace, aimed at SMB builders and interior firms, priced per workspace. It is not built for measurement-book / rate-analysis civil-contractor billing — that segment is better served by civil-specific tools.
How much does it cost to try?
₹5,500/month per workspace on Starter, 14-day free trial. Pricing on the /pricing page.
