Why Mr. Rao paid ₹23,000 extra for his steel last month
You call Ravi because Ravi has always been your guy. Your father called Ravi's father. The rate he gives you is “good rate, sir, family rate”and you believe it, because what else are you going to do — call three vendors on a Monday evening when the slab pour is Tuesday morning? That's exactly the trap Mr. Rao was in until last month, when one boring little screen on his phone saved him ₹23,000on a single steel order. Here's what actually happened.
The Tuesday slab pour
Mr. Rao is building a 4-floor residential block in Sarjapur. The Tuesday slab pour needed 10 tonnes of 12mm TMT, so on Monday he called Ravi at RR Steels like always. Ravi quoted ₹62,500 a tonne. “Sir, market is up, family rate only.” Mr. Rao said haan— then opened Rebaar and tapped “New RFQ” instead.
Thirty seconds: 10 tonnes, 12mm TMT, deliver Tuesday 7am. He ticked Ravi (RR Steels), Ramesh (Sai Iron), Suresh (Bengaluru Steel) and hit send. WhatsApp went out, vendors filled the link, and by 9pm three quotes sat side by side.
- Ravi (RR Steels) — ₹62,500 · delivery Monday
- Ramesh (Sai Iron) — ₹60,200 · delivery Tuesday 6am ✅
- Suresh (Bengaluru Steel) — ₹59,800 · delivery Wednesday (too late)
Suresh was cheapest but a day late — useless when the pour is locked for Tuesday. Ramesh came in at ₹60,200, confirmed Tuesday 6am. Ravi's “family rate” was ₹62,500. Mr. Rao awarded the PO to Ramesh in ten seconds, and the audit trail stamped itself. ₹2,300 saved per tonne, ten tonnes — ₹23,000 in his pocket on one order.
He rang Ravi himself, told him honestly Sai Iron had beaten him by ₹2,300, and asked him to sharpen his pencil next time. Ravi, to his credit, did — but that's a story for the next slab.
“Five minutes on Monday evening pays you ₹2,000–₹20,000 on Tuesday. Best hourly rate I'll earn all month.”— Mr. Rao, after his second RFQ
Before vs after
Before:
- One phone call to Ravi, accept whatever rate he says — ₹62,500/tonne
- Zero idea what the actual market rate is this week
- Nothing on paper if the rate later looks fishy to your partner or your CA
- Awkward to ask other vendors because Ravi will “find out”
- Site engineer has no record of why this vendor was picked
- Same ₹2,000–₹3,000 leak on every steel, cement and tile order, every month
After:
- Three quotes on one screen in under 12 hours — ₹62,500 vs ₹60,200 vs ₹59,800
- Real market rate visible before you sign anything
- Audit trail: who quoted, when, who won, who approved — saved forever
- Vendors compete in writing, not over chai, so no one feels personally slighted
- PO is generated from the winning quote in one tap — no re-typing
- ₹23,000 saved on the first order, and Ravi sharpens his pencil for the next one
Why this works (beyond just savings)
The money is the obvious win. The less-obvious wins matter more in the long run:
- You finally know the real market rate. Not “Ravi rate” — the actual rate three vendors will sell at this week.
- The audit trail protects youif your brother, partner or CA ever asks “why this vendor?” — the answer is on screen.
- Family-business protection.Nobody can quietly favour their cousin's firm because every quote is logged with a timestamp.
- Vendors raise their game on their own. Once Ravi loses one RFQ, his next quote comes in sharper without you saying a word.
- It teaches your site engineer how to buy. He sees the comparison and learns what a good rate looks like.
How to set it up in five minutes
Inside Rebaar, go to RFQs → New RFQ, pick your project, list the items, tick 3 vendors from your saved list, and hit Send. Each vendor gets a WhatsApp message with the spec; when they reply, the parser auto-fills the quote into your comparison table. Click Award on the winner → PO is created with the locked price.
If you'd like to try the same workflow on your next big buy — steel, cement, tiles, anything over a lakh — your next Tuesday slab can pay for the whole year's subscription. Start free →
